In the past year, I have heard more and more people talk about the “paleo diet.” It’s also been called the Caveman diet, Paleolithic diet, Stone Age diet and hunters-gatherers diet. I have been familiar with the paleo lifestyle for a few years since a former co-worker introduced it to me. Honestly back then I was surprised to hear him talk about it- now the paleo diet has gained incredible attention it seems like overnight. The CrossFit system seems to be a huge supporter of paleo eating and I’m sure they had a lot to do with educating people about it.
So what is the Paleo Diet?
I had a new co-worker (at my new job) that has been trying to lose weight and mentioned she was thinking about the paleo diet, however she wasn’t sure what that meant- she just knew people at her gym were seeing results with it. I’m guessing there are quite a few people out there confused as to what paleo eating is all about, too.
So here it is….
Paleo eating is based on the premise of eating primal foods. This means meat, meats, vegetables, fruits and nuts. You don’t eat any diary, refined sugar, legumes or grains. The premise is that you eat foods that our ancestors did thousands of years ago before carbs became mainstream. Ideally the meat comes from animals that ate the most natural meals- so ideally grass fed (or wild-caught in the case of seafood.)
Paleo eating is very similar to the clean eating lifestyle that I try to live, as it focuses on real foods, at-home preparation, grass fed meats and low sodium. Because of these similarities, you will find some of my recipes will also fall into the paleo category.
